A leading company that provides online Sales Tax Services
and Products, Seattle, WA
Project Description
The client’s online system accepts sales data
from their customers’ systems processes it and
prepares tax reports for state, city, county and tax
jurisdiction. The key to the success of their service
is reports of enterprise sales and tax data. Performance,
Security and Usability were the critical business requirements
for the Reporting Solution that our client needed.
The Solution
The old tax reporting system had following issues:
• End Users had difficulty to extract and reconcile
data from Tax History tables
• Very slow running reports, sometimes timing
out
• Ineffective information for filing tax returns
• Inconsistent and unsubstantiated reporting
• Printing of reports was difficult
• Download was not possible without rendering
in browser
Encodex has built a brand new datamart,
ETL and web based reporting solution that provided:
• Consolidated datamart specifically designed
for reporting
• Automation of data loads using ETL (SSIS)
• Reconciliation, data controls
• Designed for Scalability and extensibility
• Enhanced security by embedding reports in user
console pages
• Good Report usability and UI
• Download possible without rendering in browser
Design Highlights
Encodex has built a datamart and a web-based reporting
solution. The users could log onto web site and run
reports and/or export and download data. The SalesTax
Datamart was designed using dimensional modeling i.e.
star schema. In dimensional modeling, the same data
can be reported or queried in different dimensions very
efficiently for large volume of data. The datamart was
populated using SQL Server Integration Services. Web
based reporting was provided using SQL Server Reporting
Services with best of Security features. The user could
define search criteria i.e. fields and value ranges
to search data. The user could also pick and choose
the columns in the search results and the data exports.
The database was designed to scale and extend for large
volume of data.
